Best AI customer service software in 2026: 8 tools compared

You're probably shopping for AI customer service software because your contact volume grew faster than your headcount. Maybe peak season last year meant hiring a wave of temps, or your team of 15 is now covering email, chat, and phone with the same people who used to handle email alone. Almost every vendor on your shortlist will promise to resolve most of those conversations automatically, and almost every vendor will show you a demo where it works.

This guide compares eight AI customer service platforms with a lens most comparison lists skip: what happens when the customer on the other end is a shopper with an order number, a sizing question, or a return window closing on Friday. If you run support for a retail or ecommerce brand, that lens changes which tool wins.

What AI customer service software does

AI customer service software answers customer questions and completes tasks without a human agent, and helps human agents work faster when a conversation does need them. The better tools talk to customers directly on chat, email, SMS, and voice. They take actions in your other systems, like looking up an order in Shopify, canceling it, or changing a shipping address. And they assist your human team with suggested answers and summaries so nobody starts a conversation from scratch.

The differences between vendors show up in the details. Some tools are an AI layer you bolt onto an existing helpdesk. Some are a full helpdesk with AI built in. Some can read a customer's past conversations and order history, and some only see the message in front of them.

How we evaluated these tools

We weighted the criteria toward what matters for a mid-sized retail or ecommerce support team, especially one without dedicated IT or engineering help. We looked at six things:

  • Commerce actions. Can the AI do things with orders (look up status, cancel, refund, update an address), or only answer questions about them?

  • One AI across channels. Does the same AI handle chat, email, SMS, and voice, with the same knowledge and rules, or do you configure each channel separately?

  • Customer history. When a customer comes back, does the AI (and your team) see what happened last time?

  • Handoff to humans. When the AI escalates, does the agent get the full conversation and context, in the same tool?

  • Who can set it up. Can your CX team build and change AI workflows in plain language, or does every change go through a developer?

  • Measurement. Can you see which topics the AI resolves, which it escalates, and where it's getting things wrong?

Resolution rates in this guide come from each vendor's own website, and vendors measure resolution differently. Treat them as the vendor's claim, and ask how the number is calculated before you compare two of them. Gladly publishes this guide and lists itself first, so read our take with that in mind. We've tried to describe every tool, ours included, by what it does and where it fits less well.

The 8 best AI customer service software tools

1. Gladly

Best for: retail and ecommerce brands that want one AI to serve, support, and sell across every channel, with the full customer relationship in view.

Gladly is a customer service platform organized around each customer's full history. Every conversation a customer has had, on any channel, lives in one continuous timeline, and Gladly's AI works from that same history. So when a shopper who emailed about a late delivery last week opens a chat today, the AI already knows about the delivery.

Gladly uses one AI across chat, voice, email, and SMS. Your team configures what it does with Guides, which are written in plain language, and Gladly's Shopify integration lets the AI look up orders by number or email, update a shipping address, and cancel an order with an optional refund and restock. Gladly also offers pre-built Shopify Guide templates for order tracking and cancellations. The same AI runs pre-purchase conversations too, recommending products and helping shoppers decide, so service and sales happen in the same place.

When a conversation needs a person, it moves to a human agent in Gladly Team, the agent workspace, with the full timeline attached. Team Assist gives those agents suggested answers and next steps, and Journeys shows where the AI is resolving conversations and where it's falling short.

Retail brands report results on both sides of the house. Rothy's resolves 31% of conversations with AI and holds a 93%+ AI CSAT, and KÜHL resolves 79% of email with AI and cut WISMO emails by 44%.

What to consider: Gladly is built for B2C brands, and most of its customers are in retail, ecommerce, and travel. If you support a B2B software product with complex technical tickets, a tool built for that use case may fit better. Pricing depends on company size, so book a demo and we'll walk through what it looks like for your volume.

I always said one of my goals was to never let agents go because of AI. But I'm finding I don't have to staff for peak anymore. I'm just hiring for attrition.

2. Zendesk

Best for: large, multi-department support organizations that want a widely adopted helpdesk with a big app marketplace.

Zendesk is one of the most established helpdesks on the market, and its AI now sits at the center of what it calls the Resolution Platform. The lineup includes AI agents that resolve issues autonomously across messaging, email, and voice, a Copilot for human agents, AI-powered quality assurance, and a knowledge layer that feeds answers to both. Zendesk's marketplace is large, so you'll likely find a connector for most of your stack.

What to consider: Zendesk organizes work around tickets, so a returning customer usually starts a new ticket, and your team relies on search or apps to piece together history. Check which AI features are included in your plan and which are priced as add-ons, then model the full cost at your peak-season volume. We've written a longer comparison of Zendesk and Gladly if you're weighing the two.

3. Intercom Fin

Best for: teams that want a strong AI agent quickly, and teams that want to add AI to a helpdesk they already use.

Fin is Intercom's AI agent. Intercom says Fin averages a 76% resolution rate across more than 12,000 customers. It works across chat, email, voice, and social, handles multi-step tasks through a feature called Procedures, and can run inside Intercom's own helpdesk or on top of other helpdesks like Salesforce, Freshdesk, and HubSpot.

What to consider: if you run Fin on top of a different helpdesk, you're managing two systems, and the AI and your agents may not share the same view of the customer. Ask how Fin connects to your commerce platform and what order actions it can take for your specific setup.

4. Gorgias

Best for: small and growing Shopify stores that want a helpdesk built around their storefront.

Gorgias is an ecommerce helpdesk with deep ties to Shopify, and it also supports BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce. Its AI Agent is trained on your brand, policies, and Shopify catalog, handles product recommendations as well as support questions, and Gorgias says it resolves 60% of support tickets. Agents can see and act on order data inside the helpdesk.

What to consider: Gorgias organizes work around tickets, and its pricing scales with ticket volume and AI usage, so run the math on your busiest month. As your team grows past a single storefront or adds channels like voice, check what's included and what's extra.

5. Kustomer

Best for: B2C brands that want a CRM-style customer view with AI on top.

Kustomer describes itself as AI-native and built on a unified data foundation that serves both AI and human agents. Its AI lineup includes Concierge for resolving customer requests across channels, Envoy for agent assistance, Architect for building and improving experiences, and Data Explorer for analysis. Retail and DTC is one of its focus industries.

What to consider: Kustomer gives you a lot to configure, which suits teams with an admin who likes building. Implementation time and who does the work are worth pinning down for a team your size. If you're comparing options, we cover more in our roundup of Kustomer alternatives.

6. Salesforce Agentforce for Service

Best for: companies that already run on Salesforce and want AI inside that ecosystem.

Agentforce for Service is Salesforce's AI for customer service. It includes an AI agent for customer self-service and an AI assistant for service reps, and it deploys across voice, web, portals, SMS, and WhatsApp. Salesforce says Agentforce resolves 85% of Salesforce's own customer service requests.

What to consider: Agentforce gets its power from your Salesforce data and configuration. If you're already a Salesforce shop with an admin or partner on hand, that's an advantage. If you're not, factor in the implementation and ongoing admin work before you commit.

7. Freshdesk with Freddy AI

Best for: cost-conscious support teams that want a familiar ticketing helpdesk with AI options.

Freshworks' AI for Freshdesk has three parts: Freddy AI Agent for customer self-service, Freddy AI Copilot for agents, and Freddy Insights for support leaders. Freshworks says the AI Agent can resolve up to 80% of queries without human intervention.

What to consider: Freshdesk is a ticketing system at heart. Several Freddy AI capabilities are sold as add-ons, so confirm what your plan includes, and ask what ecommerce actions the AI can take in your order system.

8. Ada

Best for: enterprises that want a dedicated AI agent platform sitting in front of their existing support team.

Ada calls itself an agentic customer experience platform. Its AI agents work across voice, messaging, and email, follow your standard operating procedures through Playbooks, and take actions in business systems through a feature Ada calls Ada Computer. Ada reports an 84% automated resolution rate.

What to consider: Ada is an AI layer, so your human agents still work in a separate helpdesk, and context from the AI conversation has to travel with each escalation. Watch one escalation in the demo and see how much arrives with it.

How to choose AI customer service software for a mid-sized team

Eight tools, eight different answers to the same question. The right tool for a 500-agent contact center with an IT department behind it is often the wrong tool for a 20-person team where the CX director also owns the knowledge base, the QA program, and the Shopify integrations. If that second description sounds like you, these six questions turn the criteria above into a demo script:

  1. Can I change what the AI does without filing a ticket with engineering? Ask the vendor to edit a workflow live during the demo.

  2. Show me a returning customer. Have them pull up someone who contacted support twice on two different channels, and see what the AI and the agent can see.

  3. What order actions work out of the box with my commerce platform? Get the specific list, like order lookup, cancel, refund, and address change, for your platform.

  4. What does a handoff look like? Watch an escalation from AI to a human and check whether the agent has to scroll, search, or ask the customer to repeat anything.

  5. How do I see what the AI got wrong? You'll want resolution and escalation reporting broken down by topic.

  6. What does my bill look like in November? Pricing tied to tickets, seats, or resolutions all behave differently when volume doubles. Ask the vendor to price your peak month.

If you're still sorting out which category of tool you need, our guide to AI customer service for ecommerce covers the basics, and our broader list of the best customer service software includes tools without a strong AI focus. The strongest option for a retail brand is usually the one where the AI and your team share the same customer history and your CX team can tune the AI themselves. That combination is what lets a mid-sized team handle peak season without hiring for it, while the conversations that do reach a person get more time and more context.
